On the Water

Swimming and snorkelling are possible from the rocks and terrace of the taverna at the end of our road. The nearest sandy beaches are just a ten minute drive away at Almerida and Kalives with water sports and activities available at both.

From the Venetian harbour at Chania there are various boat trips, one of which will take you to see the island sanctuary of the endangered Kri Kri, a native wild goat. There is also a diving school.

River boat trips are available from Georgioupolis to visit terrapin colonies.

Off the beaten track

Crete is renowned for its spectacular mountain and gorge walks. There are, however, many less well known paths and tracks. These can be enjoyed independently or, alternatively, a locally based English guide offers guided walks for individuals or for small groups of varying distances for both the casual and serious walker.

For those who prefer two wheels, mountain bikes and mopeds are available locally. It may also be possible to arrange trips with a local birdwatcher and naturalist who are familiar with many of the best sites for local birdlife. We can provide more information when you arrive.

History and Culture

Crete abounds with sights of antiquity. The Palace of Knossos is an easy day trip from The Green Terrace along with the excellent archaeological museum at Heraklion. There are, however, many other Minoan sites such as the Palace of Festos and Ayia Triadha. Also of note, is the excellent archaeological museum in Chania.

The progress of the island's remarkable history does in fact surround you with Roman remains, Venetian forts, Byzantine churches and monasteries containing medieval frescos. A moving monument to the island's more recent history is the monastery of Arkadhi, regarded as a national shrine to the island's 19th century struggle for independence.
