Care Tips for a Newly Laid Turf

Are you planning to buy turf Sydney? Choosing a new turf is a huge decision and a very costly one too. There are several factors that needed to be taken into consideration; getting the wrong type of grass can be an expensive mistake. Thus, it is wise not to rush things when deciding on a new turf.

But for those who have already had some new grass laid, you can still work with what you have and still achieve a healthy, lush-looking garden. These care tips can help you maintain a wonderful lawn.

  1. Water It Well

Irrigation is the key to a healthy lawn. Consider water as grass food. When there is ample supply of water, your grass is adequately fed; thus, resulting in a lush, green carpet of grass in your lawn.

As soon as you have laid the grass and its roots have rooted into the soil, make sure you water it sufficiently. Experts even agree that the water supply should be of such level that the water will soak into the ground below.

If you don’t have access to a hose pipe or ample supply of water, it is highly recommended that you lay the turf during cold, rainy season, like in autumn. Doing it during summer where rainfall is limited may not be a good idea.

  1. Continue to Water the Turf Daily After Laying Down

For the next 2 weeks after you laid down the turf, you need to continue watering the grass. Where the weather is warm, irrigation should be done early in the morning or during evenings. This approach is designed to avoid the evaporation of water due to the heat of the sun.

When the turf is laid during hot summers, watering the newly installed grass should be done every day for a month. Daily hydration may not be required where the grass is laid in autumn or during cold weather seasons.

To check if your grass is adequately watered, look at its underside. If it’s moist for most of the time for a whole month after it has been installed, you may hold back on the watering. This is usually the case in autumn or cold months where ample irrigation results in moist undersides.

  1. Avoid Over Watering the Grass

As much as watering frequently is needed for a healthy, green grass, you should avoid over watering it too. Too much water to the point of drowning the turf can encourage the development of lawn disease.

You can easily ascertain if you’ve overwatered your turf. Lift its underside and see if it moist or dark. If it is, then you have sufficiently watered your grass. But if it’s sopping wet, stop the irrigation or risk lawn disease.

  1. Avoid Putting Pressure on the New Turf

To encourage growth, avoid walking on the new turf until its roots have deeply entrenched into the soil. This process, however, may take a couple of weeks. You’ll know if the grass has deeply rooted if you can no longer lift the turf easily.
